Orange ends year with 1,138,000 broadband customers

Orange has published its 2007 results and as the results cover all of France Telecom's activities, the UK relevant section can be found down on page 17.

A growth of some seven per cent in broadband customers from 1,063,000 to 1,138,000 over a 12 month period sounds reasonable until you look at the level of growth from providers like TalkTalk and Sky in the last year. It is more worrying when, as ISPreview noted, at the end of the third quarter Orange UK had 1,142,000 customers indicating a small drop in the last quarter. As the results describe it, this is "limited broadband growth in a highly competitive market".

Digital TV over the Orange LLU network is under trial in London and Leeds, but with BT Vision gaining an ever greater foothold and with the existing cable, satellite and freeview PVR options, any new entrant to the TV over broadband needs something technically exciting and financially enticing. If a high definition video service at resolutions of 1280 by 720 pixels (720p format) or higher with a decent bit rate could be delivered either live or via downloads at a price point that was cheaper than Sky HD then Orange may be able to stand out from the crowd.
